About Western Australia
Western Australia is the single largest state in Australia occupying the entire western third of the Australian continent. It has a population of 2.2 million people with most people living in the south-west corner of the state. The state was so named by the British settlers who settled there after 1826. Due to the discovery of gold in the region in the 1890′s, more settlers move into the region and the population started to increase faster. The state’s capital city is Perth. Perth is an important port into the Indian Ocean with a large amount of cargo passing through its harbor. Western Australia as a whole also has a vibrant recreational sector with horse racing events being one of the key highlights.

Horse Racing in Western Australia
Western Australia races are concentrated around three main racecourses: Ascot, Gloucester and Belmont.
Ascot Racecourse: This racecourse is located in Perth. It hosts Western Australia’s summer and autumn racing carnivals held in March/April and November/December respectively. The track is 2000 metres in circumference and has a 200 metre inclined straight. This straight is recognized as one of the toughest in Australia and has proved the bane of many horses during competitions on the track including the Perth Cup. Where other entertainment is concerned, the racecourse has nine alfresco dining and bar facilities serving fresh gourmet food. It also has two restaurants: the Terrace and the Flying Colours.
Gloucester Park: It is located in East Perth and is primarily a harness racing racecourse. It hosts the top harness races in Western Australia. Race meetings are either held midweek or on Saturdays and this is all year round. Midweek races are on Monday afternoons starting at midday, and on Tuesday evenings at dusk. On Saturdays, the first race starts at 7.10 pm. There are 10 races that take place on weekdays and 8 races are held on Saturdays.
Belmont Park Racecourse: It is located between the city of Perth and the Swan River. The park is close to the Belmont Park Railway Station and has a circumference of about 1700 metres and a straight that is 333 metres long. It has sweeping bends at either end of the track.
Perth Cup
Perth Cup is Western Australia’s top thoroughbred flat race and has been held at Ascot Racecourse each New Year’s day since 1887 making one of Australia’s oldest horse racing competitions. The person who has won 5 consecutive wins and later two wins is Mr. P.A Connolly with Blue Spec in 1904. Some of the recent winners include Guyno (NZ) with jockey J. Whiting in 2009 and Cat’s Fun with jockey D. Oliver in 2008.
